Common Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms

UTI symptoms can vary from one person to another, with some infections producing no noticeable symptoms at all. When symptoms do develop, they often include an intense, persistent urge to urinate despite not being able to produce much urine. Many people also experience a stinging, burning, or itching sensation while urinating, or notice that their urine contains small blood clots, smells foul, or is cola-colored, bright pink, red, or cloudy.

Other common symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:

  • Back pain or discomfort
  • Fatigue
  • A general feeling of being unwell
  • Pelvic pain (in women)

If a UTI spreads to the kidneys, it can produce additional symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, pain in the side or upper back, a fever, chills, and confusion.
