Why Does Your Ear Hurt?

You are probably aware that an earache can result from an ear infection, which may require antibiotic treatment. Many ear infections are triggered by an upper respiratory infection, such as the common cold or flu. Another type of ear infection is swimmer’s ear, which can occur when moisture remains trapped in the ear after swimming or bathing, creating an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Sometimes, rapid changes in air pressure—which can occur during an airplane flight—can also lead to ear pain.

Another possible cause of ear pain is earwax buildup. Earwax is a natural substance produced by your body to help keep your ears clean and lubricated. As your jaw moves whenever you talk or chew, earwax is normally pushed out of your ears and then flakes off your skin. But a cotton swab or another object inserted too far into your ear canal can push earwax deep into your ear, where it can harden, build up, and create a blockage. In addition to ear pain, other signs of earwax buildup include:

  • Muffled hearing
  • A feeling of fullness in your ear
  • Ringing in your ear (tinnitus)
  • Itching in or around your ear
  • A spinning sensation (vertigo)
